The
Fragile Stone Theory 2K8
It promised to be an interactive feast and something containing the words
2k8. Immediately I was apprehensive, to use those words in the title you
really have to live up to them. Especially the word interactive, because I
find there are a lot of misuses of this word. To begin with the dance was
what I can only describe as a haphazard attempt at a futuristic style
something? A something I really couldn’t get my head round what it was
supposed to be. There was a guy with a laptop, visuals on a screen, dancers,
singing and music. Wow, multimedia! However it was really badly put together
and the narrative made no sense and didn’t capture my attention in anyway.
There just wasn’t enough dancing and the things that filled up the gaps
between the dancing just weren’t interesting enough to keep me entertained
until the good bits.
The other dancers in the show were very good, the two clones of miss Harper
were great and I loved the unconventional shape of their bodies compared
with typical dancers. Their shapes were reflected in the way they danced,
the movements they made and the attitude they had when dancing. The
movements were sharp and frantic; emphasis was made on the legs, the hair,
and the silhouette of their shape. The dance wasn’t as impressive in terms
of technique or limits of the human physique and ability. But that’s
probably just down to my personal taste because I prefer dancers to push
their bodies to extremes of physical ability. The more it makes me go wow!
Or even ow! The better for me.
The second part of the show was much better than the first for me, mainly
because it was minus the singing, and the guy on the laptop, who frustrated
me throughout the first part because all i could think of was when on earth
is he going to dance! I wanted him to break out into an amazing dance and
given that he didn’t exactly have a dancers physique, it would have made the
whole thing fantastic for me! That’s all i wanted from the show. Also in a
way the fact that the emphasis was on him, and then Harper singing, it
completely took the emphasis away from the dance. It even made it trivial in
a way. Don’t get me wrong I love multimedia works, but in my opinion you
cant just take an actor, a few dancers, some visuals, a poor narrative and a
once great dancer slash singer, throw it in a pot mix it up and call it
multimedia. It needs a little more thought and depth of concept. |
