In an evening where one was unable to even look away for a moment, this trio of extremely talented and adept musicians played us their jazz, using anything that their instrument could bear. Comprising of piano, double bass and drum kit, the three played like a group of young children, discovering their instruments for the first time and vying for musical attention. Each were in their own jazz trance as if rejecting the musical ideal of an ensemble, separate and wandering down their own path. Beresford on piano had flying fingers, at times alike to the revolutionist Cecil Taylor, whilst the bassist, (Williamson) and drummer, (Turner) used astonishing techniques to derive new sounds from their instruments. As a listener, I felt as if jazz had moved on, but without me and I was getting left behind from all this modernism. The first “song” was a 40-minute ear-bashing of different ideas and the concert finished with a series of shorter encores. Personal favourite moments were when Beresford played with just his right hand, Turner accompanied with a brushed beat and Williamson let his wandering bass line go but for an advocate of what we all know as jazz rather than free jazz, that’s not really surprising, is it? |
